Recommendations for conducting spring field work in conditions of war and limited resources

NAAS members have prepared recommendations for conducting spring field work in conditions of war and limited resources, according to a message on the Academy’s official website.

The war, the beginning of which coincided with the spring field work, made its own adjustments to the functioning of the agrarian and political complex of our country. Some of the land was beyond the physical possibility of their cultivation. Due to various reasons, mostly subjective, some agricultural formations did not have time to form the necessary supply of fuel, mineral fertilizers and other types of material and technical support for effective spring field work.

Since there is a shortage of precipitation in most of the territory of the right-bank forest-steppe, we observe a shortage of productive soil moisture. Over the past 50 years, we have experienced an unprecedented drought. So, for the period from February 11 to March 17, not a single millimeter of productive soil moisture was added here. Night frosts, combined with daytime dry winds, actively contribute to the weathering of soil moisture from the arable soil layer.

The ability of some farms to sell Spring Seeds and others to acquire them accordingly plummeted, which negatively affected the economic situation of both the former and the latter. The price of fuel, fertilizers and plant protection products continues to grow. Not enough agricultural formations in the region are provided with highly effective mineral fertilizers.

These challenges require non-standard approaches to spring field work in 2022.

Members of the National Academy of Agrarian Sciences of Ukraine have prepared recommendations on the specifics of spring field work under martial law and limited resource provision.
